An archaic way of registering motor vehicles in Colorado could soon be revamped under a bipartisan measure set to be heard in a House committee Wednesday.
House Bill 1289 provides authority to the state’s department of revenue to establish a system that allows for the electronic registration and titling of motor vehicles and electronic transmission of motor vehicle lien information.
“It’s an all paper process right now when you buy a car,” said Rep. Dominick Moreno, a Commerce City Democrat, who is sponsoring the effort. “This would allow the department of revenue to modernize the system.”
Moreno, for example, said when a person buys a car and loans are processed through banks the registration information is all sent by paper.
“This really speeds up the process and still include all the steps in which you have to identify yourself, that you have to provide proof of insurance, that would still be included … it would just move to an online process.”
The bill would allow the department of revenue to accept gifts, grants or donations into the electronic motor vehicle registration cash fund. Currently, the department of revenue allows Coloradans to renew driver’s licenses electronically.
The House Transportation and Energy Committee will hear the bill on Wednesday.
